Due to popular demand, here is the list of our Monday night road rides with corresponding directions. Please feel free to print them out and take them with you on your ride. We did our best to make sure that the directions are correct. However, mistakes do happen so if something doesn't make sense, please feel free to let us know so we can make the appropriate changes. Please note that all rides start at the back of our shop as a point of reference.

Durham Loop (~25mi)

Portland Hills (22mi)

Ride Notes: Approx 22mi. Lots of hilly parts in Portland. Climbs are rewarded with leg-recovering descents.

  • Head towards the Arrigoni Bridge via Pearl and Spring street.
  • Left onto Rome Ave. to loop around under the bridge so as to be on the proper side of the road and good access to the sidewalk on the bridge (Note: We ride the sidewalk on the bridge it is the only safe way over but be aware of glass)
  • Head straight out rt. 17A (old Main St) in Portland
  • Proceed to the 4 way stop past the fairgrounds
  • Go straight through the 4 way and up the hill (bearing right onto Rose Hill Rd)
  • Just after the playing field/track take a left on Cox Rd
  • Follow Cox for a short while and bear right at funny three way intersection up Penfield Hill
  • Pace yourself as we will be climbing for the next several miles
  • At crest of first hill bear right again (intersection of Stephen Tom +Penfield)
  • Stay on Penfield all the way to T intersection at bottom of the hill (be careful! It comes up quick)
  • Go left at the base of the hill
  • Take first right towards Cobalt center
  • Take left at stop light onto Rt. 66 (stay single file)Take right onto Rt. 16
  • Take 1st right onto Hog Hill Rd
  • Stay on Hog Hill all the way to Rt 151
  • WATCH YOUR SPEED ON THE DESCENT TO RT151! Hairpin turns on narrow roads at the end can get you into trouble FAST!
  • Take a right onto Rt 151
  • Take it all the way to stoplight 4 way of Rt. 66 and Rt. 151
  • Go straight through 4 way
  • Take 1st left (this road parallels rt. 66 and will pop out behind the Winchester saloon)
  • Take a Right onto RT. 66 out past Tri-Town Plaza by the old train station.
  • This leads you back under the bridge by the oil companies
  • Come back into town over the bridge on the north side 
  • Be careful on main St.

Tilcon / Whirlwind Hill Loop Easy (~26mi)

Ride Notes: Fun ride through Middlfield, a bit of Wallingford and Durham.

  • Leave store left on Broad St
  • Right up Court
  • Left on High St

  • Take all the way to Wadsworth long lane 4 way 
  • Right at 4 way onto Wadsworth

  • Take a right onto 157 to go up the hill (still 157) by the golf course

  • Left onto Whirlwind at the farm 4 corners 
  • Whirlwind turns into Howd 
  • Take 2nd left onto tri mountain (sign missing as of spring '06) 
  • Bear right onto Parmalee 
  • Take Parmalee all the way to 17

  • After fairgrounds take right onto Maiden Lane

  • -Stay Right on Brainard Hill
  • -Go up Brainard Hill (the third amigo)
  • -Brainard hill becomes South Bartholomew
  • -The second climb on this rd is the little friend
  • -Descend S. Bartholomew. After overpass, Left onto Saybrook.
  • -Take Saybrook back to shop.

Powder Ridge Loop (20mi)

Ride Notes: A good mix of hills, descents and flats. Nothing terribly challenging. A good, quick 20mi loop.

  • Go out Church St (by Wes U.) to long lane.
  • At "4 Way" take right onto Wadsworth.
  • Go all the way to Wadsworth park and go left onto 157
  • Take the right across from the cemetery the bridges 157 and Jackson hill
  • Take a left onto Jackson
  • Take first right onto Indian Hill golf course rd
  • Take left at "T" and then go to the base of Powder Ridge
  • Climb Powder Ridge Rd and go all the way to end
  • Take left towards Rt. 68
  • Take left onto 68 and take all the way to Rt. 17
  • Quick left onto 17
  • Take first right onto the back roads towards Johnson Lane
  • Take this rd all the way to the cow farm and bear right. (Johnson?) This rd becomes Millbrook
  • Take Millbrook all the way to Randolph rd "4 way"
  • Come back into town by stop and shop.

Ride Notes: This is the extended version of the flat Guilford Lake Loop. The extended version adds some climbing if you're bored with the flats!

    • Take all the way to Randolph Rd

    • Great Hill Turns into Long Hill Rd

    • Take a Left onto Hoop Pole Rd, follow to Lake Dr (continues around the opposite side of the lake) 
    • Follow Lake Dr all the way back to 77

  • Take 79N to the intersection of 17.

  • Rockfall turns into Hubbard

  • Follow up through the Golf course
  • Left onto RT 157 (Reed’s Gap Rd)
  • Right onto South St (Brings you up the steep hills to the orchard)
  • Left onto Powder Hill rd

  • At 3 way Bear right onto Barnes Rd (Looks Like an extension of 68)
  • Take 1st Right onto High Hill rd
  • Take 1st left onto Carpenter

  • Cross East Main St to Preston Ave. (The road is across to the right)
  • Preston turns into Baldwin follow over RT 66 and under I-91
  • Take 1st right after I-91 (Thurrott Ave)
  • Thurrott turns into Preston
  • Take right onto Country Club Rd stay on it for a while
  • Go straight through the 217 4 way onto Westfield St
  • Take Westfield all the way to Newfield St
  • Right onto Newfield
  • Left onto Liberty St
  • Take 1st right onto Berlin St
  • Cross Rt. 66
  • Go Left on Washington Terr. and ride along the green.
  • Right on High
  • Left on College
  • Left On Broad
  • Shop is on the right!

Two Bridges (~33mi)

Ride Notes: A classic Pedal Power ride.

  • Head towards the Arrigoni Bridge via Pearl and spring street.
  • Left onto Rome Ave. to loop around under the bridge so as to be on the proper side of the road and good access to the sidewalk on the bridge (Note: We ride the sidewalk on the bridge it is the only safe way over but be aware of glass)
  • Cross the bridge and take the first right into the industrial area
  • Take first left towards waste management buildings
  • Take second left by the tracks and ball fields
  • Take right onto Rt. 66
  • Stay on 66 all the way to the two lanes become 1 and then take the left behind the Winchester café (Middle Haddam Rd)
  • Follow Middle Haddam all the way, it becomes Old Middletown Rd and bear right at the Depot Hill Rd intersection towards Rt. 151.
  • Cross Rt. 66 to 151 south. Follow this for a few miles towards the Salmon River
  • 151 becomes 196 just before the Salmon River bear right
  • Crest hill by Sunrise Resort and then take 1st right onto Johnsonville Rd
  • Bear right onto RT 149
  • Take 1st right onto RT 82
  • Cross Haddam Bridge
  • Take 1st Major right (mid way up hill) onto Camp Bethel Rd
  • Take right onto RT 154
  • Take 1st left after Schoolhouse Rd. onto Wakley Hill Rd in Haddam (small Green w/ Statue) this will get us off 154 for a while
  • Bear left onto 154 again and follow through Higganum Center
  • Stay on 154 all the way to Middletown
  • The road between Aircraft rd and Main Street becomes rough and then congested so be careful of holes and concrete cracks.

Little City / Beaver Meadow (~33mi)

Ride Notes: A little climbing with a wickedly fast (if you work for it) downhill.

  • Left on to Broad

  • Continue on Randolph
  • Right onto Millbrook at the bottom of the hill
  • Millbrook turns into Foothills

  • Right at Little City/Sima Rd Junction (it is Sima for a while then Little City again)
  • Left onto Jackson
  • Bear right onto McTeigh
  • Right onto Burr Rd
  • Cross 81 to Parker (or continuation of Burr)
  • Left onto Beaver Meadow
  • Left onto Hayden Hill Rd (funny 3-4 way intersection) Hard Left
  • Left onto Wakley
  • Bear Left onto 154 north
  • Take 154 all the way into Middletown
  • ALTERNATE ENDING: If you get to the 154/81 intersection w 45 minutes of light left take this route to add some hills and miles
  • Left onto Candlewood
  • Right onto Brainard Hill rd
  • Brainard becomes Bartholomew
  • Follow Bartholomew to 154/Saybrook Rd

  • Tryon ends in a goofy 4 way so bear right up to the stoplight
  • Left onto 17N
  • Right onto Chestnut Hill Rd (follow all the way to end)
  • Cross Old New London Turnpike
  • Follow Quarry to RT 83
  • Left onto RT 83
  • Follow RT 83 to RT 94
  • Right onto RT 94

Sebastian's Century 

An awesome, scenic, mostly flat (it is CT, so it's not board-flat), 100 miles that winds through CT. There are roughly 7-10mi of busy roads but the rest is on beautiful back roads that are nicely paved. Middletown to Essex to Branford and back. Several bicycle shops and food stops along the way so no need for a sag wagon! Below is the cue sheet. The towns are marked so if you get lost, you can get your bearings a bit better. There is no mileage so keep your eyes peels for signs and landmarks. Have fun! Begin by parking at Xavier High on Millbrook Rd.
